Where Miracles Began: The Story Behind Miracles & Milestones

Some businesses begin with a business plan.

Miracles & Milestones began with a legacy.

Long before this shop existed, before there was a website, a collection, or even the name Miracles & Milestones, there was Miracles Happen.

In 1996, my dad, Jan, and my grandfather, Jimmy, better known to most as “Schmidty,” opened Miracles Happen.

That name has stayed with me all these years.

Because when addiction and recovery are part of your family's story, you learn pretty quickly that miracles don't always arrive with fireworks. Sometimes they are much quieter.

Sometimes a miracle is making it through one more day.

Sometimes it's answering the phone.

Walking into a meeting.

Asking for help.

Coming home.

Repairing a relationship.

Getting another chance.

Or waking up and deciding, once again, not today.

My Pop passed away in 2000, only a few years after Miracles Happen began. But the heart behind what he and my dad started never disappeared.

And neither did the name.

From Miracles Happen to Miracles & Milestones

Years later, when I began thinking about creating something centered around recovery, sobriety, encouragement, faith, and the people who love someone struggling with addiction, I kept finding myself pulled back to those two words:

Miracles Happen.

I didn't want to simply recreate something from the past. I wanted to honor it while allowing it to become something of my own.

That's where Miracles & Milestones was born.

The miracles are the moments we sometimes thought would never come.

The milestones are every hard-earned step along the way.

Thirty days.

Six months.

One year.

Ten years.

The first meeting.

The first honest conversation.

The first time someone says, I need help.

The first time a family begins to trust again.

And sometimes, the milestone is simply making it through today.

Every one of them matters.

Recovery Has Touched My Life Personally

This isn't a subject I chose because it made sense for a brand.

It's personal.

Addiction has touched my family in ways that have changed us forever. I know there are people on every side of this story: the person fighting for recovery, the parent lying awake at night, the sibling who doesn't know what to say anymore, the spouse desperately hoping things will change, the friend answering the phone, and the person learning how to love someone while also learning where their own boundaries have to be.

There is so much pain surrounding addiction.

But there is also extraordinary courage.

There is forgiveness.

There is faith.

There are second chances.

There are people quietly stacking days, months, and years together until one day they look behind them and realize they've built an entirely different life.

Those stories deserve to be celebrated.

More Than Merchandise

My hope for Miracles & Milestones is that it becomes more than a place to buy something.

Yes, you'll find shirts, sweatshirts, journals, gifts, sobriety milestone pieces, and things meant to encourage people in recovery.

But behind every one of those things is a much bigger message:

You made it another day.

Your progress matters.

Your story matters.

And whether your milestone feels enormous or almost too small to mention, it still deserves recognition.

Recovery isn't always a straight road. Families don't heal overnight. Grief doesn't follow a schedule. Faith can be strong one day and shaken the next.

Life is complicated that way.

But I believe we can hold both things at once: the reality of how hard this can be and the hope that something beautiful can still grow from it.

Carrying the Name Forward

I wish my Pop could see this.

I wonder what he would think about seeing the spirit of something he and my dad began in 1996 finding a new life thirty years later.

I think he'd understand why I couldn't let those words disappear.

Miracles happen.

They did then.

They still do now.

And somewhere between the miracle we've been praying for and the life we're trying to rebuild are thousands of tiny milestones worth noticing.

That's what this space is about.

For the people in recovery.

For the people still trying.

For the families who love them.

For the people we've lost.

For the people who helped us survive.

And for anyone who needs the reminder that today can still be the beginning of something different.

This story started long before me.

I'm just honored to carry a piece of it forward.
